Obituary of Donald Phelps, Jr.

Donald “Donnie” Cooper Phelps, Jr., passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2018, after battling a long illness. He passed peacefully as he drifted off to be with the Lord.

Born to Betty Lou Terrill and Donald Cooper Phelps, Sr., he grew up in Owensboro and Danville and attended Frankfort High School where he graduated in 1966. His football career continued at Western Kentucky University where he was a member of the “thirteeners” Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He remained a UK fan at heart - his dad “Dopey” Phelps was a standout football player from Danville High School, played at UK under Paul “Bear” Bryant, and was drafted to play for the Cleveland Browns where his team won a world championship in 1950.

Donnie graduated college, married, and worked 35 years for state government in the Attorney General’s Office, Special Investigations Division, until his retirement. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge #530 where he had many friends, and he also enjoyed coaching little league sports for many years in Frankfort.

Donnie is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Walker Phelps Moore (Bill) and Katherine Terrill Phelps. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Calley Walker Moore, Cameron McKinney Phelps, and Kelsea Le’Cre Harvey, and a special friend, Kathy Perros Fuqua.

He was preceded in death by his beloved brother Rodes Terrill Phelps.

Pallbearers will be Bill Moore, Dennis Bourne, Cameron Phelps, Bernard Moore, and Drex Davis. Honorary bearers will be Kinney Noe, Bill Crumbaugh, Albert Kinman, and Eddie Tutt.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4-6 pm on Thursday, November 29th. Graveside services and burial will be held in the Richmond Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30th.
