Obituary of Max M. Smith

Max Martin Smith, 87, passed away at Lexington Country Place on Sunday, October 28, 2018. He is survived by his wife Joyce Kemper Smith; two daughters, Cary Kemper Smith of Frankfort and Sally Smith  Martin of Owensboro; a son, Martin Thomas Smith of Brookville, Indiana; a niece, Janie Grant (Ronnie); two nephews, John Wilson (Terry) and Eugene Wilson (Judith); and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Born in Carroll County to the late Howard Preston Smith and Emma Crawford Smith, he was raised in Frankfort from an early age by his late uncle and aunt, Martin Tandy Smith and Nanny Coleman Smith. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dollie Smith Wilson.

Mr. Smith graduated from Frankfort High School in 1949, and went on to graduate from Transylvania University in 1953 and the University of Kentucky School of Law in 1958. He served in active duty in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.

Mr. Smith was a locally practicing attorney in Franklin and surrounding counties for over 54 years. He served as Frankfort City Judge from 1961-65, Chairman of the Kentucky Pubic Advocacy Commission in the early 80's, a member of the Kentucky Worker's Compensation Board from 1980-84, and President of the Franklin County Bar Association in 1984.  

Services will be held at Rogers Funeral home on Wednesday, October 31st at 1:00 pm with visitation beginning at 11:00 am.  Burial will follow in the Frankfort Cemetery.
