Obituary of Julian Bond

Julian Andrew Bond passed away December 13. Julian was the husband of Katie Hecker Carney and father of Emerson Andrea Bond.
Other survivors include parents Amir and Marga Bashir; siblings Eticia Thomas, Arnulff (Sonja) Handy, Wallace (Cynthia) Handy, Allen Handy, Bryant Handy, and Linda Handy; aunts and uncles Wonet (Randy) Taylor, Jacques (Yulanda) Williams, Doris A. Bond, Kenneth G. Bond (Mary), Carol L. Lawrence (Kenneth White), Stephen E. Bond (Barbara), Patricia L. Younge (Joseph), and Diane H. Bond; nephew Walt Drake; niece Terrah Miranda; great-niece and -nephew Inga Johnson and Santiago Miranda; and in-laws Donna Hecker and Tom Lowry and Mark and Anna Carney.
He was pre-deceased by twin siblings who died in infancy, his mother Wanda Bond, and grandparents Doris and Norman Bond and Bernice and James “Tige” Williams.
Julian was born in Delaware and raised in Owensboro, Ky. His parents were active in the civil rights movement and named their son for Georgia Senator Julian Bond. Julian attended Owensboro High School, studied at Oxford University in Great Britain and graduated from Kentucky State University.
Julian worked for the YMCA of Kentucky and the Kentucky Youth Association in his youth and more recently for the Council on Post-secondary Education/Gear-Up Kentucky and the Office of Employment Training at the Kentucky Career Center. He also made many friends working at restaurants such as Kelley’s Garden Cafe, Capital Plaza Hotel, Applebees and Chili’s.
He was a former board member of the Franklin County Women and Family Shelter and L.I.F.E House for Animals. He continued to volunteer at L.I.F.E. House and especially loved Dachshunds. Julian was a current member of the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service.
Julian was known for his big smile, big laugh and, especially, his big heart which couldn’t contain all the love he had for his family and friends and fellow human beings.
A gathering of family and friends will take place from 12 to 6 pm Sunday, December 17, at Rogers Funeral Home with prayers at 5:30. All are welcome.
