I served under captain walls board USS Longbeach CGN-9. He would come down with the combat information center for briefing every morning. I had perhaps a handful of discussions with him for various and sundry purposes. I found him to be a very kind and benevolent leader. Long Beach under his command was the first US man of war to knock down an enemy aircraft with a missile. After the kill was confirmed they got on the PA system and commended everybody award ship not just the CIC crew. Running a shift is a team effort. There was no doubt by anyone in CIC about him being the team leader.

I served on USS George when Admiral Wallace was CO, arriving just out of OCS 11/53. Captain Wallace was the most admirable man I ever met. Condolences to his family.
