I knew Bill through our mutual friends Gerry Bessinger and Reba Rye. Back in 1974, I was living and working in Russell Springs and frequently would drive up to Frankfort for the weekend. On Saturday, October 26, 1974, I was in Frankfort, hanging out with Gerry, Reba and Bill. Bill suggested that we go the races. Not being from Kentucky, I had never seen a horse race in the flesh and said, "Sure. Let's go."
It was closing day at Keeneland and what a day it was! High blue sky, mild temperature and those magnificent thoroughbreds. We hung over the rail and watched them thunder by at the finish line. And with Bill's help, I cashed a ticket or two.
I moved away the following year but have always remembered that afternoon and the great time we had. Bill was a good and decent man. And a lot of fun, too.
