George Sweger passed away on October 17, 2024 in Frankfort, KY. Born on June 17, 1939, in Milford, Delaware and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, George lived a full and adventurous life and was devoted husband to Marlene and loving father to Brent, Matt and Christine. George graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy. During his time there, he sailed to over 100 countries. After graduation he worked as a naval architect for the Department of the Navy, where he managed significant projects and contributed greatly to the field. In 1964 he married Marlene, whom he met through their shared faith at church. In 1966, they moved to Laurel, MD where they settled and raised their family. A devoted member of Oaklands Presbyterian Church in Laurel, George served as an elder, treasurer, and bell ringer for many years, always dedicated to his community. He had a number of hobbies and interests including designing sets for musicals, performing magic tricks, doing home improvements, and piloting his airplane. He was an avid traveler, always happy to share stories of his journeys around the world. Later in life, he took up running and ran his first marathon at the age of 55. His greatest passion was golf, a sport he loved throughout his life. After retiring from his naval career, George pursued his love of history, becoming a tour guide in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Annapolis. He also developed and taught history courses at a local community college, inspiring many with his knowledge and enthusiasm. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marlene and his parents Mildred and George. He is survived by his three children, Brent, Matthew and Christine, and his cherished grandchildren Chase, Brooks, Grace, Gwen, and Arriyah, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy. His warmth, humor, love of storytelling, and devotion to his family and friends will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held at Jumonville Camp and Retreat in Pennsylvania, a camp that George had many fond memories of as a youth. Date is to be determined.
