Obituary of Mason Harris, Sr.

Mason Collins Harris, Sr., age 82, passed away on September 16, 2024, in Frankfort, Kentucky. Born on February 21, 1942, Mason was known for his God-fearing nature, humor, and love for music and dancing. He cherished moments spent with his family and friends, creating memories that they will hold dear forever.
Mason attended Mayo-Underwood School followed by Frankfort High School. He devoted much of his career to working at Bendix Corporation and part-time at the Kentucky State University Student Center. He also worked at Wal-Mart, where he was appreciated by both colleagues and customers.
A man of faith, Mason was actively involved at St. John AME Church in Frankfort, where he served as Assistant Church School Superintendent. His commitment to his community was evident through his years of volunteering at the Access Soup Kitchen and Men's Shelter and serving as an AA sponsor. Mason was also a constant presence at the Senior Citizens Center, where he enjoyed playing games and was always impeccably dressed, known for his stylish and colorful outfits.
An avid sports fan, especially of the University of Louisville, Mason's enthusiasm was contagious. His hobbies included dancing and listening to music, which were a source of joy and relaxation for him.
Mason is survived by his children, Mason Collins Harris, Jr. (Lynn), Wendell Harris (Susan), Candace Murphy, and Freda Harris; grandchildren, Fairen Harris, Collin Harris, Cisley Harris, Kyla Preston, and Amiya Preston; and a great-grandson, Braxton Brown. He also leaves behind a dear friend, Ann Delores Coleman, along with other relatives and loving friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orine and Mattie Harris; his infant brother, Orine T. Harris; and his best friend, Clarence "Buzzy" Metcalf.
Services will be held at St. John AME Church, 210 Clinton St., Frankfort, KY, with visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, September 23, 2024. The funeral service will commence at 1:00 pm the same day. Interment will take place on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 10:00 am at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 3250 Versailles Rd., Frankfort, KY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Access Soup Kitchen and Men's Shelter, 311 W. Second St., Frankfort, KY 40601, a cause close to Mason's heart.
